Holy sushi! Twice in two days … now that’s what I’m talking about. :)
My Mom’s friend from Vancouver stopped by our new digs for a visit yesterday and the plan was to grab lunch. It was soooo ridiculously hot in the afternoon that none of us could fathom either walking very far or eating anything even remotely warm, so we ended up on the Danforth and decided to try a new (for Mom and I) sushi place called Katsu Sushi.
This place certainly impressed! First of all, the space is huge as far as sushi joints go, which meant accommodating my stroller was a piece of cake (not really though … Mom says I can’t try real cake until my birthday next month). In addition to a small outdoor patio, there are two quite spacious levels at Katsu. Due to the heat and the lack of sun cover on the patio we decided to sit inside, and for stroller purposes we stayed on the lower level. But only a few stairs up was a whole other seating area with a tree right in the middle; there was definitely lots for me to take in sight-wise over the course of our meal.
My highchair arrived promptly, and was wooden, super clean (well, until I was done with it), and with all safety paraphernalia in good working order. This place is so big that I was able to fit at the end of our table without feeling like I was going to be in the way, which is a huge bonus. That way I also had a great view of the whole restaurant, the patio AND the street … so I got in tons of people watching!
I ordered my standard avocado roll, with plans to steal the tofu from Mom’s miso soup. Our soup came right away, but I was a little disappointed to find only one tiny piece of tofu in the bottom; next time I’ll see if it’s possible to ask for extra tofu. The rest of our food took quite some time to arrive, which may have been as a result of what seemed to be a huge catering order they were trying to get out the door. I was starving, so Mom had to satiate me with Cheerios, apple sauce and yogurt while we waited, which meant I wasn’t as eager as usual to dig into my meal. Regardless, I put back a bunch of avocado and sticky rice, and loved the fact that they gave me my own plate to eat from. I even tried BBQ eel for the first time and it was delicious!
Customer service at Katsu didn’t disappoint. A bunch of the staff performed silly antics from across the restaurant to keep me entertained throughout my meal. They checked in on us regularly to make sure we were enjoying our food, and were especially interested to hear about all the things I’d tried. And I’ll admit I made quite a mess under my highchair today, which I offered to clean up myself, but they wouldn’t hear of it. The only awkward moment was when they brought the bill and thought I was going to pay … I guess it was misleading that I sat at the head of the table, but seriously, do I look like I carry payment options?
All in all, I had a great time at Katsu Sushi today, and it might even give Sushi Delight a run for it’s money next time Mom, Dad and I decide to do sushi for dinner. Great find!
